After the sky high prices for bad frozen food at Volcano, the Hilo Farmer's market was a welcome refreshment. This place came highly recommended to me by a chef friend. Super local, the small stands are crowded with a variety of seasonal fruits, veggies, and home cooked meals. Would definitely recommend for a good inexpensive meal, groceries, and a taste of local life.
There are a lot of fruit stands to get your tropical fruit fix - and the prices are very reasonable compared to the grocery store. I love trying different fruits and seeing if I like them or not. Before buying, take a stroll through the market to check prices and see which produce looks the best. Hint: if you go at the end of the day, you might get some better deals since they don't want to pack all the extra fruits and veggies up!
If you want stuff that isn't from ABC or one of the big box stores then grab something here.
Some level of cheesy Hawaiian branded items made elsewhere. But the majority of items and food is locally sourced or made.
Friendly and helpful vendors. It was raining when we went. Tried some new fruit and purchased some nice gifts for friends and family. They had beautiful plants and flowers for purchase as well.
Try some of the fresh fruit and juices or you'll really be missing out before leaving the island. Pro tip: make sure you see the juices being made, some vendors use a powdered mix for "fresh fruit" juices.
