Ok, so, if you have zero expectations about what ramen and sushi are like... this place is fine. My soup was fine. The sushi was fresh.
Great atmosphere and friendly staff. Service is quick. The food itself is like junk food sushi. You know, the thousands of different rolls available with all kinds of ingredients. It's tasty, for sure, but if you're looking for more traditional sushi, go elsewhere. We didn't try the ramen, but maybe that's where we went wrong. Spicy ahi poke was tasty, too.
We walked around downtown Hilo exploring and looking for places for dinner. This place caught my eyes because I like ramen. It was a neat looking place. Workers were friendly. I felt like the background music didn't match the sushi/noodle house vibe but that didn't affect my decision about this place. I ordered a ramen and expected "chashu" pork not a "char siu" pork. I've never had char siu pork in ANY of my ramen before. I didn't like it. Everything else was good with the ramen. The soup was tasted good.
A hip little place for sushi and drinks. Ramen was excellent and rolls were innovative, but an over-reliance on spicy ahi everything got boring.
If you want to wait 1 hr for the instant noodle and pull 1 glass of water to get rid off the salty taste, come here :/
But... I ordered ramen that SAID it had char siu in it . You know, super thinly sliced, slowly marinated pork belly that is so soft the fat is like jell-o? Well it wasn't char siu, or even poorly made char siu. It was Roast Pork, which is another, very specific dish. It's the pork that's red on the outside that you get in Lo Mein. It's also never served in soup. It's also Chinese, but whatever. It's like ordering bacon and being given deli ham. It's just disappointing. So, obviously I didn't say anything, because I would sound like a crazy person and also a huge jerk. Also they clearly just didn't even have char siu so what would be the point. BUT, why is it on the menu??? Roast Pork isn't on the menu, do they think char siu just means pork???
