Nice trail over a variety of volcanic landscapes and through several kipukas (remnant islands of mature tropical forest). This is one of the best places to find endemic Hawaiian birds on the Big Island. The Hawaii Elepaio, I'iwi and Apapane are likely to be found within a mile of the trailhead. This is the best place to find the rare Akiapola'au, but you need to hike in 4 miles.

The best place to find the 'Akiapola'au

Great trail for flattish hike. Beautiful flora through several different lava flows. Lush kipukas. Dogs allowed on leash. No facilities. Only 20 minutes from Hilo. Love to hike this when I need a quick workout.

Awesome hike over both a'a and pahoehoe lava flows and also going into surviving little 'islands' of dense rainforest. Beware the total hike length is somewhere between 8 and 8.7 miles. That's going out to where it meets the dirt service road (also called powerline road) and walking back along that then following the highway back to the start of the trail.
