You can taste as many as 12 flavors of macadamia nuts here. They have specials and there is lot of discounts for bulk for very fresh nuts. This quality is better than big box stores for sure. They also have other items such as gourmet salts and jewellary to name a few.
Fairly large tasting room. Air conditioned. Only 3 stalls in ladies room. If,you are there when tour buses arrive from the ship (four arrived during our visit), you WILL have to wait. They will ship what you buy. Self guided tour. Small snack bar on premises.
The Mauna Loa Mac Nut farm is an okay place to spend a few minutes. You can look in the windows of the factory and watch all the machines and workers prepare and package all the macadamia nut products. It's a super short self-guided tour. They have a big store, an obvious tourist trap, but they keep most flavors of mac nuts stocked, and they give out samples (like two or three nuts). Prices are pretty much the same as you'd find at the grocery store though. The farm is not too far out of the way from downtown Hilo, but I would place it low on the priority list for island visitors. If you really need to burn an hour doing something, I would just recommend spending it at the beach, rather than making a stop here. Not that special.
