Feels otherworldly up here. Great place for unique vacation photos. Plan to come up and catch the sunset and be sure to bring warm layers no matter what time of day you come. The gift shop has warm clothes for sale that are pricey but the lined hoodies will become your favorite. Stay for a chance to hear about what's going on in the sky tonight and have a chance to look through high powered telescopes. This is one of my favorite places in the world!
Dress warm! It was a cool 50 degrees during our visit, which felt really cold compared to 85 in Puako. The building was clearly not meant to handle the Friday crowd but the staff did a great job. We enjoyed looking at Jupiter and Saturn through the telescope but were disappointed that they did not show the movie again after 7:30 p.m. "because of the crowd". Decent gift shop, overpriced as anywhere else but you can get hot chocolate or soup mix which helps combat the chill.
The staff at the visitor center are nice and very knowledgeable. If you have any question about Mauna Kea they will be able to answer it. The really cool part is, every night they bring out telescopes and aim them at points of interest in the night sky. Allowing you to get a really good look at planets and constellations. This is a wonderful trip.
Hawaii is another popular destination just like Jamaica because of its sublime beauty, culture and the weather. Dinner cruises, beaches, sunsets to writing WILL YOU MARRY ME on the sand makes it a suitable romantic place for your idea to propose your beloved.
The star gazing session that starts at 6 is phenomenal. The presentation is excellent. Don't miss the short hike across the street to watch the sun set first (up a small hill). Dress warmly - layers! Hot chocolate and tea are available for purchase. Feels like a party. (And don't be that guy who turns on white light flashlights or headlights after the star gazing starts.)
